While a standard toilet is a fixed-height fixture designed for the "average" user, an accessible toilet is specialised equipment engineered to accommodate a user’s specific physical needs.
The most significant difference lies in adjustability and weight capacity. A standard domestic toilet is static, usually sitting at a height of around 400mm, which can be difficult for anyone with hip or knee issues. In contrast, an accessible rise and fall toilet can adjust its height by up to 200mm, allowing it to meet the user where they are most comfortable, whether they are transferring from a wheelchair or moving into a standing position.
Beyond height, there is a major difference in durability and function. Standard toilets are not designed for the side-loading pressure of a wheelchair transfer or the higher weight requirements of bariatric users. Accessible models, like our extra load smart toilets, are reinforced to handle weights up to 250kg and often feature integrated wash-and-dry technology. This eliminates the need for manual wiping, which can be a significant barrier to independence.
While a standard toilet provides a basic utility, an accessible toilet provides a tailored solution for safety, hygiene and dignity.
