Can rise and fall sinks be installed in any bathroom?

Can rise and fall sinks be installed in any bathroom?

Mark Woodcock |

In most cases, yes. The Wash-Able Height Adjustable Sink is designed to fit into any standard bathroom or cloakroom without extensive structural modifications. However, because these systems move vertically to accommodate different users, particularly wheelchair users, there are a few technical and spatial requirements to keep in mind.

At Wash-Able, we provide the specialist hardware (including the lifting mechanism, tap, and flexible plumbing), but as a supply-only company, we recommend that you discuss the following points with your installer.

Space and Clearance

While the sink itself fits into a standard footprint, you must account for the range of motion.

  • Vertical Travel: The sink moves up and down to ensure a comfortable height for everyone in the household. You must ensure there are no fixed obstacles, such as low-hanging cabinets or pre-installed grab rails, that could block its path.
  • Under-Sink Access: One of the main benefits of a rise & fall sink is that it provides clear space underneath for a wheelchair to pull in closely. When planning the installation, ensure the floor area directly below the sink remains clear of obstacles.

Plumbing Adaptations

Traditional sinks use rigid piping, which would snap if the sink moved. To solve this, our height-adjustable sink comes as a complete kit including:

  • Flexible Braided Hoses: These allow the water supply to move freely with the basin.
  • Specialist Waste Trap: A flexible waste kit is included to ensure consistent, leak-free drainage regardless of the sink’s height.

Your plumber will simply need to terminate the household's hot and cold feeds and the waste outlet at a specific height on the wall (detailed in our installation manual) to allow these flexible connections to work correctly.

Power Requirements

Because the lift mechanism is motorised, you will need a nearby electrical supply. Usually, this involves a fused spur located safely away from direct water contact, often behind a shroud or in an adjacent cupboard.

Wall Strength

The motorised frame carries the weight of the ceramic basin, the water and the pressure of a user leaning on the unit for support. The unit must be mounted to a solid wall or a reinforced stud wall. If your bathroom has standard plasterboard walls, your installer may need to add "noggin" (timber reinforcement) between the studs to ensure the sink is securely anchored.

The Importance of an OT Assessment

While we can confirm that the unit is designed for "hassle-free" setup, we always advise consulting an Occupational Therapist (OT) before purchase. An OT can help determine the ideal height range for your specific needs, ensuring the rise-and-fall sink provides maximum independence and ease of use.
